Philadelphia Gear Corporation has purchased the majority of General Electric Corporation’s (GE) marine gear product lines. With the completion of this transaction, PGC will acquire intellectual property, equipment, and transition assistance to broaden its existing capabilities to manufacture main reduction gear assemblies. The purchase does not include the “CVN–78” nuclear aircraft carrier product line, which will continue to be produced by GE.
GE has a backlog of business through the end of 2009 that will be completed at its Lynn, MA facility. PGC will manufacture the new product lines at its existing manufacturing sites and will not be assuming any operation of GE’s Lynn, MA facility.
GE is a primary supplier to the United States Navy and many foreign navies. GE’s principal designs in recent years have been the main reduction gears for the Navy’s Arleigh Burke Class DDG destroyer as well as prototypes for the LCS class of ships.
PGC President and CEO Carl Rapp said, “We are very pleased to announce this transaction. The GE assets that we are purchasing complement our existing military program business.”
PGC has been a supplier of power transmission solutions for more than 117 years and has been a provider to the US Navy for over 70 years. Active PGC programs in support of the Navy include the main reduction gears for the San Antonio Class of amphibious warfare ships, known as the LPD (landing platform dock), as well as primary components for the Virginia Class fast attack submarine. |

Philadelphia Gear Corporation was recently named as one of the Best Places to Work in Pennsylvania for the third consecutive year. The program recognizes 100 companies throughout the state in two groups: 50 medium-sized companies (25-250 employees) and 50 large companies (251 or more employees). Philadelphia Gear was recognized in the medium category. |

“This statewide survey and awards program was designed to identify, recognize and honor the best places of employment in Pennsylvania,” said PGC President and CEO Carl Rapp. “Being honored for the third year in a row is a true testament to the extraordinary people who work here and the roles they embrace to meet the needs of our customers.” |

It is predicted that over the next 25 years, more than two-thirds of the world’s economic growth will come from outside the United States. Therefore, what Philadelphia Gear is accomplishing globally is critical for its long-term success. Philadelphia Gear has now opened sales and technical offices in Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
…what Philadelphia
Gear is accomplishing globally is critical for its
long-term success.
“PGC is not servicing new international regions with manufacturer’s reps, but rather with direct employees of our company,” said Carl Rapp, Philadelphia Gear President and CEO. “These individuals embody the philosophies of Philadelphia Gear, and have been charged with literally and figuratively translating the commitment and identity of our company to the global marketplace.” |

LATIN AMERICA
In early 2005, Philadelphia Gear extended its reach into Latin America with the appointment of Jorge Flores to Regional Sales Manager, responsible for the sales territory that includes Mexico, Central America, and South America. In 2007, the company added an additional sales/technical resource in the person of Silvio DeSimone, who is responsible for Mexico and Central America. Lastly, in 2009, PGC has expanded its presence into Brazil by appointing Miguel Rios as Territory Account Manager for Brazil and parts of Mexico.
EUROPE
Philadelphia Gear also recently expanded its presence in Europe with the appointment of Andy Pomerantz as the Director of Sales and Technical Services for PGC Europe. Pomerantz’s European presence will allow Philadelphia Gear to further support existing customers and accelerate the growth of new business in the region. Pomerantz is currently overseeing manufacturing representatives throughout the region, and serves as a technical and commercial resource for the European continent, including Benelux and offshore installations in the North Sea.
MIDDLE EAST
Philadelphia Gear Corporation also opened offices in Dubai, UAE in 2006. To run the office, the company named James Aston Middle East Regional Sales Manager. Aston is responsible for handling sales and service related to the use of gear products and services within the oil and gas, petrochemical and power generation industries throughout the region. In 2008 PGC hired R.K. Kumar, reporting to James Aston, as a Sales Engineer for the Middle East region. Mr. Kumar will be tasked with developing key accounts in the energy-market focused territory within the United Arab Emirates.
CHINA
Philadelphia Gear’s newest international sales and technical office was added in July of 2008 with the opening of PGC’s office in Chengdu, Sichuan province of China. This region is being headed up by Michael Muck, who has over 20 years experience in technical sales and service related to power transmission equipment. |
