The new facility services customers in the southeastern U.S.

March 15, 2002 (Hueytown, AL) - Philadelphia Gear Corporation, a full-service provider of gearing and power transmission solutions, announces the opening of its fifth regional service and manufacturing facility, located in Birmingham, Alabama. The new facility is strategically located to offer service and repair capabilities for Philadelphia Gear customers throughout the southeastern United States.

The new facility offers rapid repair and overhaul response, as well as rapid renewal parts and field service response capabilities. Birmingham employees, led by on-site manger, Jim Dowdy, are expert in power transmission equipment life cycle support, including the repair and rebuild of all major gearing brands. Technical capabilities of the facility include 14,000 square feet of workspace, as well as 25-ton crane capacity.

The Birmingham facility, like all other Philadelphia Gear regional service centers, has Internet-based access to Philadelphia Gear's world-class Engineering and Technical Center in Norristown, Pennsylvania and its vast library of drawings, engineering standards, and manufacturing process standards. John Brace, General Manager of Philadelphia Gear's facility in Houston, Texas, will assume that role for the Birmingham facility as well.

"Our Birmingham location allows Philadelphia Gear access to the many manufacturing and industrial centers throughout the South," says Dowdy. "We've already been able to take on business opportunities that in the past would've been sent to our New Castle of Houston facilities. Our proximity to these industries gives us an even faster response time than we might otherwise have had." The new facility already services several regional companies, including Drummond Coal, Lehigh Portland Cement, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, National Cement, USX, and Alabama Power.

"Being close to the end-user is crucial for Philadelphia Gear to provide responsive and cost-effective customer service," comments Brace. "Opening the Birmingham facility allows us to continue extending our technical expertise and specialized service across the country."

A founding member of the American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA), Philadelphia Gear products can be found in use worldwide; from enclosed gear drives used in the oil fields of Saudi Arabia, to speed reducing units helping power the cable cars of San Francisco. The company serves thousands of customers across the globe from its regional service and manufacturing facilities in New Castle, DE; Birmingham, AL; Chicago, IL; Houston, TX; and Los Angeles, CA. Philadelphia Gear is headquartered in Norristown, PA.
