United States Coast Guard Fleet Support

As an outgrowth of our experience with the U.S. Navy, Philadelphia Gear was called upon to lend its expertise in main reduction gearing to the U.S. Coast Guard for the manufacture of gearboxes used in the main propulsion systems of their fleet.

In present day, Philadelphia Gear services new and aftermarket gearboxes for the following ship classes of the U.S. Coast Guard:

  • WAGB Polar Class ice breakers - Designed for open-water icebreaking in the Arctic and Antarctic.
  • WHEC Hamilton Class cutters – Powered by diesel engines or gas turbines, these ships use controllable-pitch propellers and are equipped with a helicopter flight deck, retractable hangar, and facilities that allow helicopter deployment.
  • WMEC Reliance Class cutters – Powered by two diesel engines, these vessels are used for law enforcement and search and rescue missions, and are capable of supporting one helicopter.
  • WLB Juniper Class seagoing buoy tenders – These vessels use a single controllable pitch propeller with bow and stern thrusters which allow efficient maneuverability in restricted waters.
  • WPC Patrol Boats - This class of ships is used by Homeland Security and law enforcement teams in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico.  They are powered by four diesel engines.
